Adobe Photoshop - Images

The JPEG file format is not a good choice for screen shots, line
art, or images that include text. The image compression algorithm
used in JPEG is optimized for *photographic* images, which
statistically have few hard egdes or abrupt transitions between
contasting color regions, both of which are defining characteristics
of line art and screen shots. Because of the algorithm, JPEG
inherently produces artifacts (seen as a kind of "smudginess")
near hard edges. In a photograph, this smudginess is largely
masked by the surface texture of the object being photographed.
But in line art and screen shots, where there is no surface texture,
the smudginess is often glaringly apparent.
