How do you differentiate yourself (UserFriendly)

I don't find samples useful for candidate evaluation unless
I can ask questions about them and get the candidate's reply
face-to-face.  The earlier in the hiring process a prospective
company asks me for samples, the less interested I tend to
be in their position.
