Resume or CV

I recently received a request from an American student who is in London. She
was asked to provide a CV as part of an application for a summer internship.
She asked me what was the difference between a resume and a CV, could I
provide a format for a CV. I tolde her that a resume and a CV were
essentially the same thing. (She has a very nice resume already done.) When
she contacted the company's HR group (in London), she was told that, no, a
CV is different from a resume.

I'm stumped. This is for a student, not an executive or an academic with a
long publications list.

Does anyone know how a CV would differ from a resume, especially for a
student who's applying for summer internships? Could it be that the UK has
different formats?
