Word numbering best practice question?

Sean Brierley wondered: <<Numbering in Word (2003)--if reference
fields and VBA are not an option--what's the best way to set up list
numbering for styles that are used for procedures and not for
headings (using the Word GUI)?>>

Can't use fields? Create the lists in Frame, and import them at the
last possible second before you ship the documentation. <g>

The gold standard for numbering in Word is still Dave Knopf's {SEQ}
field workaround:
http://www.knopf.com/tips/autonumber.html

I haven't seen any proposed method that works better or more easily,
and haven't seen this document updated since it first appeared on the
Web, so I assume it's still your best bet.
