style/usage question

I guess this could also be a matter of style.

 

Image you are updating documentation that refers to "Adobe Acrobat" just
as "Acrobat," and the term is well known only within a certain industry.

 

Would it be fair to change the first occurrence of "Acrobat" to "Adobe
Acrobat," and then add something like "(hereinafter referred to as
'Acrobat')" ?

 

I will probably shorten the parenthetical expression up a bit, but that
is the first thing that popped into my head.
