style/usage question

Why would you say "(hereinafter referred to as 'Acrobat')" and not just
(Acrobat)? I don't really understand the use of that introduction. I
think that it is acceptable to use "Adobe Acrobat (Acrobat)" because the
convention is so common. Just don't overuse it when readers probably
understand the short name. I worked with an old-timer that wanted me to
introduce GUI as "Graphical User Interface (GUI)" for a document that was
written for programmers that were probably more familiar with the short name
than with the long name.

I guess this could also be a matter of style.
Image you are updating documentation that refers to "Adobe Acrobat" just as
"Acrobat," and the term is well known only within a certain industry.
Would it be fair to change the first occurrence of "Acrobat" to "Adobe
Acrobat," and then add something like "(hereinafter referred to as
'Acrobat')" ?
I will probably shorten the parenthetical expression up a bit, but that is
the first thing that popped into my head.
