Not to mention that Word and Excel files have had macro viruses in the
past. To the best of my knowledge Microsoft issued a security fix, but
a) how do you know that whoever is sending you an XLS has the patch on
their system, and b) what's to say that there isn't another
vulnerability in those file formats (macro related or in a completely
different area of the file structure) that could be exploited next
week?

So, should businesses ban Office files? You can just imagine what
would happen if anyone suggested that...
