My experience has been that top people in either field *can*
command top dollar, but that tech writers are often less likely
than business analysts to successfully present themselves as
"top people."  In fact, many writers I meet seem to emanate
an aura of "downtrodden, undervalued, second-class employee" 
even before I talk to them long enough to get to know them. 

While it is true that there are companies that do not think 
highly of documentation or the people who produce it, it 
is *more* true that a company is unlikely to ever think 
more highly of you than you do yourself.
