Care and feeding of SMEs can be quite literal.  

When my SMEs were programmers in nearby cubicles, a candy jar filled with gourmet treats kept them "dropping by".

Now I lure in the machine operators from the plant floor with a soft chair, friendly face, and air conditioning.  The candy jar always has Everlasting Gobstoppers and "sanded" sassafras drops from the Amish store, but they're mostly here for the A/C.
