Tufte is the author.

It is awesome to see Napoleon's credibly-sized army go into a river, and 
  only a shadow of it comes out on the other side.

A most-admirable graphical data example in that book is the Italian 
train schedule.

I can see why it is a good idea.  I think the foundation books list is a 
good idea too.
