"Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum
et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC.
This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the
Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..",
comes from a line in section 1.10.32....
...The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal
distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here',
making it look like readable English."
As for editors yelling out "I want 10 column inches on such and such a
story..." I spent a number of years as a freelancer for both magazines and
newspapers and got paid by the column inch. Depending on their type styles,
column widths and text point sizes, it was easy to convert column inches
into word count.
