[TCP] certification (was: ranting STC)

On the certification front I see two benefits (for different groups):
1 At the lower end (newbie/little experience) it could be used by
somebody to show that they have the 'basics' - basically people who, as
yet, don't have the experience/portfolio to show they can do the job.
2 At the higher end (experienced writers) I'd see specialist
modules (basic stuff already there) that related to specific
jobs/industries etc - project management, QA, Usability, Telecomms etc.
I'd guess John is coming from point (2) and that's probably what would
be of interest to most on this list. But, if in place, new people to the
profession would have a 'path' from newbie onwards. I don't see it as
the be all and end all. If I was recruiting a new writer it would be
just one factor in the decision process.
