When I am confronted with a document like this, I accept the fact that I
will have to start from "scratch." I have a set of templates stored on
a secure server, where anyone can take one but only I can edit it. I
print out the document for reference, then copy the entire document,
then paste it into Notepad. This strips all of the formatting from the
document. (If your document is large, you may only be able to convert
part of it at a time). I then copy it from NotePad and paste into the
proper template. It generally only takes me a few hours to put the
formatting back in.
