Ah, that does help. On the Tools menu, click Protect Document. Check the
"Limit formatting to a selection of styles" box. Click the Settings link,
and on the dialog that appears, select the styles you want to allow the SMEs
to use, and click OK to close the dialog.
You then click "Yes, Start enforcing protection", apply a password to the
document and save it.
You then send out a copy of this protected document to your SMEs, telling
them "Don't even bother trying to format it, you can't, and that's my job
anyway. Just get the information into it." If you like, tell them the list
of styles they can use if they want.
When they send the document back, you can use Tools, Compare and Merge
Documents to compare the document with the original that you have kept.
