limit vs. refine

I don't know of any authoritative references. But I'd explain the difference as that refine is used more in the sense of drilling down (narrowing your results) whereas limit is used more as a means to return fewer results. This ties in with the option you get in some searches to "limit" your results to X number of best matches.
