Leave the dot out. No one is confused by it, and you can use "an" or
"the" without muddying the issue.

Subject: "a" or "an" before a vowel sound file extension
Hi folks,
I'm wondering which of these is correct:
"[...] with a .aaa file extension"
or
"[...] with an .aaa file extension"
The question really is about how the extension is read. Is the dot read
in your head as the word "dot," or is it just glossed over/implied?
Thanks,
