Correct. And specificlly to prevent the + and - labels on the battery from being covered by battery hold-down clamps, even the frame type that go around the whole battery, the signs are next to the battery posts on the center-side and not along the outside edge.

Me thinks that the person who flamed their battery didn't look very hard and even if they did, if you aren't certain, you follow the cable to see which one bolts to the ground (frame or something attached to the frame).

With current cars being, basically, computers on wheels, 5 minutes of checking sure beats replacement of the car's CPU and electronics.

The commonly disseminated instructions for connecting jumper 
cables between cars is to attach to both battery terminals of the 
car providing the power and to the positive battery terminal and 
chassis ground of the car receiving the boost.
