Hi Shannon,
You'll have to superscript, but only *once*:
1. Type "sm" [without quotation marks] and then select it.
2. Format => Font. Click Superscript, and then click OK.
3. The superscripted "sm" should still be selected.
4. Tools => AutoCorrect.
5. In the AutoCorrect tab, click Formatted text.
6. In the Replace field, type "(sm)" [without quotation marks] and then
click OK.
This applies the AutoCorrect option to the current open template (Normal
unless you specified otherwise). Now, any time you type "(sm)" [without
quotation marks], Word will replace it with the superscripted service
mark.
