I don't use a lot of open source software, and the ones I have
used have all struck me as being fairly well documented, 
especially when you consider the process by which the 
software is developed.  My guess is that by their very nature 
open source projects tend to attract developer types who are
more interested in discussing what they're doing with others
and have better communications skills that support working 
in large, disconnected groups where they often hand work 
off to each other.
