Significance of Document Numbering?

I use a versioning for the documentation. I use XXX.YYY for my versioning where
XXX = a count of the number of content changes and
YYY = a count of non-content changes, like formatting.
I also maintain an internal-only tracking document that I use to paste blurbs I added to the document. When a release is cut, I cut my tracking document and start over. It helps me backtrack to previous versions of the doc and identify what caused a blurb to be added, changed, or removed.

Perhaps I should clarify. Document numbering as in the number for the
DOCUMENTATION. For example, Document Number - XYZ 123
As for document numbering that matches the software, I don't think
that's possible as the lineage of software can go move anywhere in 3
decimal places (ie. X.X.X).
