Not as recent, but essential reading...

Technical Editing: The Practical Guide for Editors and
Writers 
Judith A. Tarutz

In addition to books, you could point them to some
examples of effective documentation on the Internet. I
have a friend (a non-writer) who was once asked to
write some data warehousing documentation, and I was
able to point him to some nicely written procedures on
various websites. The examples gave him a better sense
of direction, and served as a template for his work.

Sometimes books are a bit too abstract.

However, if your friends are looking for only academic
and theoretical resources, then Tarutz is a great
read.
