Maybe you should look at styles as one might use an automatic gun or 
rifle. Generally, you would fire it as a semi-automatic weapon 
(manually--single shot). However, at times you may want to use it as an 
automatic. It just depends upon the situation.

In any event, it's advisable to have an earlier (or yet unsaved current) 
version of the document around, just in case you want to revert to a 
known former version. I might save an interim document by adding a 
suffix to the file name while working on it, such as filename.doc to 
filename2.doc, filename3.doc, etc. so that there's something to revert 
to. And delete those interim files afterwards.
