W-2 vs 1099

This list is giving you good advice, based on experience.

What you are describing is recruiter slight of hand, banking on your
naivete. I believe that Lauren suggested a 20 or 25 percent markup between
W2 and 1099.

I've done both W2 and 1099. I prefer W2 because I just don't like being
bothered with all the bookkeeping associated with a 1099. That's my own
laziness and plenty of others prefer a 1099 because of the higher bill rate
and tax benefits. But, there's not a prayer that W2=1099 and the recruiter
should know this.
