Wacom is def'ly the leader of the pack - I recommend the 6x8" Graphire. 
Adesso is a fine brand as well. I've tried 2 models from Aiptek (quite a 
while back) and found them wanting but you can get an 8x10 for about $120.

One bit of advice, skip the little 4x5" pads ... they are a bit 
restricting. Get a budget for a slightly larger pad. That may mean you 
need to be sure this is a move you want to make.
