Alternative to floppy

I think you are going to have to recognize that different users have
different ways of doing things.
1) Some people may have a separate external hard disk for back-ups of
critical information (I do).
2) Some people may have top-end memory sticks and choose to protect
portions on it (I've worked with people who did that)
3) Some people may have a way to save certain information to a network,
or via the Internet (not that I would recommend it, but some do...)
I think you would be best to advise your users to save and write-protect
the configuration file to some type of media NOT on their hard drive...
And give a clear warning that loss of the file could prevent them from
being able to return to that configuration in the event of damage to
their hard drive.
Hope these thoughts are helpful.

P.S. Anyone need an unused external floppy drive for a Dell Latitude?
<grin> Had it for FOUR years and never needed it! Welcome to the 21st
century...
