I remember back in the late 80s, I was teaching a word processing class
and one of the students was a hardware engineer. This was just about the
time when the 3.5" diskette was new. And I remember very clearly, when
we were talking about storage media, that he said, "You know, we are
rapidly approaching the limit for data storage. You're never going to
see anything smaller than that diskette."

 

Every time I pull my 2Gig SD card out of my camera, I think about that
guy and wonder what he's doing now.<G>

  I recently heard something about holographic data storage coming out
rather soon. The story mentioned something about the ability to hold 80
movies (or a number very like that) on one DVD! The drives are
apparently available now, but the cost is pretty high (something like
$25,000). This story said that they should be available sometime within
a year or two and be significantly less than that.
