Earlier this year I asked this question on the Framers' list and summarised
my findings in an article in my technical editors' newsletter:

http://www.wrevenge.com.au/eyrie/tenews13.htm#feature13

I've also got a whole chapter on editing using Adobe FrameMaker in my book,
Electronic Editing. Most of that chapter doesn't directly address your
question, but it does give a lot of tips on using FM. The chapter does
include a slightly amended version of the newsletter article I mentioned above.

(The book also has a chapter on editing using Adobe Acrobat.)
