TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I went through certification in Technical Writing and Editing at DeAnza
College in Cupertino, CA. It's a two-year program (which, if you're like me,
having come from a computer-capable background) means that you can learn
what you need to learn without all the extraneous stuff.
DeAnza is a community college, so entrance isn't arduous or expensive. The
Tech Writing program IS rigorous, however, covering everything in depth and
requiring you to really produce products as you go along. You will NOT,
however, get emphasis on computer-technology, so if you feel that you'd like
to get deep into technical manuals with direct knowledge of such topics,
this would not be the program for you.
If your situation does not merit the whole four-year-degree thing, then I
highly recommend DeAnza's program.
