I find www.northernlight.com very effective when performing an Internet
search. It returns the best results and they also have online docs that you
can purchase from their library for $1. If you don't find the document
helpful, you can get your money back or have your account credited for the
amount purchased.

Andrea

Yahoo! is a pretty weak contender, though it's still very
popular.

I often use www.dogpile.com (a meta search) these days, but I'm
not sure it's always time effective. It lists the top 10 hits
from about 8 or 10 other search services. It takes quite a
while to skim through the the results.

What search engines or meta search engines do tech writers favor
these days?
