I am editing a manual written by another writer who is
no longer with this company, and she used the 2nd
construction throughout the manual. I would prefer to
use the first because "indicates" just plan sounds
wrong.
Of course, I haven't been able to find any discussion
of this particular situation.
Oh, by the way, this manual is a reference manual for
maintenance specialists who do not necessarily have
strong reading skills. Therefore, I am planning to
completely restructure the language and sentence
complexity to make it easier to read, less ambiguous,
and less (uselessly) redundant (and therefore
shorter).
