Which is standard?

Observe and correct connections that indicate signs of
corrosion or excessive overheating.

or

Observe and correct connections that indicates signs

I am editing a manual written by another writer who is
no longer with this company, and she used the 2nd
construction throughout the manual. I would prefer to
use the first because "indicates" just plan sounds
wrong.

Of course, I haven't been able to find any discussion
of this particular situation.

Oh, by the way, this manual is a reference manual for
maintenance specialists who do not necessarily have
strong reading skills. Therefore, I am planning to
completely restructure the language and sentence
complexity to make it easier to read, less ambiguous,
and less (uselessly) redundant (and therefore
shorter).

Please send your replies directly to me, and I'll post
a summary to the list.

TIA!
