The fact that everyone who has a computer most likely has the MS Office
suite by default has long been a barrier to deploying Frame. Word is "free"
and Frame costs money--lots of money if everyone who reviews manuals needs
their own licensed copy.
We are getting around this problem by running a set of Frame licenses on a
Citrix server. Citrix allows anyone with a web browser to run applications
inside a web browser. Frame runs on the server. What would normally appear
on your monitor gets displayed in the web browser. Citrix is similar to PC
Anywhere. The server and client computers pass compressed screen shots over
the network.
The Citrix server allocates licenses to reviewers on a first come first
serve basis. We then use Frame's extensive document compare features to
identify changes between the files owned by Tech Pubs and the changes made
to files exposed for public comment. Working in this way restores editorial
control to the writers while at the same time allowing the subject matter
experts to enter their comments directly in the documents.
