Quite often, the SMEs develop tech diagrams. Quite often, after discussion,
I re-do the tech diagrams, but they still originate with the SME who thought
up a good visual way to express a relationship.

I've worked for a company that farmed out the creation of icons to a graphic
design company. (As a result, we all complained about all the icons.) For
icons, I think, when many are to be created, this is not a bad idea: they
must each be unique and yet groups of related icons must clearly have a
similiar theme.) I like doing my own illustrations: I would hate losing that
part of my job to a graphics specialist. Conversely, I would *not* like to
do nothing else but illustrations - for one thing, I think I'd get RSI!)

I've never written documentation that was not illustrated in some way.
