In the US it is legal to ask about citizenship. We have laws in place that allow
employer's to verify US citizenship, or Visa-holding workers as opposed to people
who are not authorized to work in the States (illegal aliens, non-Visa holding
workers, etc.)

One of my friends is an immigration lawyer and we've had many a (lively! as a lot
of my friends are Indian-born and here on Visa's) discussion about this issue.
