It depends, Dan. Could failure to follow the instructions result in the meltdown of a nuclear reactor? An airline disaster? A candidate being elected President who was not the choice of the people voting?

The issue goes beyond the design as well. From what I understand other environmental factors were at play as well. The ballots clearly state that people who make errors can request another. (The electoral equivalent of error trapping, right?) At least one person who was interviewed on NPR indicated that she knew she had made an error but was refused a replacement ballot?claimed the official said, "Nope. You've voted," took the ballot out of her hand, and dropped it in the box.

Hmmmm. I guess that would be Draconian vote validation.
