I didn't see the entire ballot, only pictures of the portion that had the
presidential candidates on it, and I can see how it could have been
confusing if people didn't pay close attention to where the arrows were
pointing. However, I would assume that the entire ballot was organized the
same way with some candidates listed on the left and some on the right of
the punch-holes. Didn't anyone who found the ballot confusing also wonder
whether they might accidentally have voted for the wrong sheriff or the
wrong senator if there were several choices for those offices, too?

Everybody I've talked to here in Michigan had a different method for voting.
I filled in little ovals with a pencil. A friend punched out little holes.
When I voted two years ago, we had to take a black marker and connect two
halves of an arrow next to the name of the candidate we were voting for.
The fact that the methods change from year to year or vary from city to city
does make it potentially confusing.

So what's the solution? I suppose it would be nice if someone came up with
a nationwide standard for ballot design or settled on a specific voting
method, but in the meantime, we'll have to use extra care when we vote and
hope that the next Presidential race isn't as close as this one. <g>
