Peter,

While I don't have a great deal of experience in this area, I can share with
you how I resolved my problem regarding search engines and PDF files. I was
tasked by my current boss to make our current intranet searchable. The
search engine would need to work with PDF files, MS Word documents, and HTML
pages. We were already using Microsoft's IIS as our web server, the one
that comes with the NT 4.0 Option Pack. The Option Pack also includes
Microsoft's Index Server, which satisfied two of the three file-type
requirements out of the box. Fortunately, Adobe provides an add-on module
for Index Server that adds PDF support. There were other options available
(as you list in your email to techwr-l), but Index Server won out on the
grounds that it was free.
