... I can tell you that if you have a Mac PowerPC (usually any mac made after 96') you should not have a problem working cross-platform. I currently use a Mac G4 as well as a Dell Dimension at work. I have never had a platform related problem when moving between the two.
There are two rules that you will need to follow.
1. Make sure that you are using the same version of the
application on both platforms.
2. Always remember that the Mac can read the PC format but
the PC can't read the Mac. So always use PC formatted disks
no matter what computer you are on, and always remember to
include an extension to the file name when you are on a
Mac.
I also use PageMaker sporadically. But it's a tool I value.
Usually I create the PageMaker files on a PC and send them to my printer (the person, not the peripheral), who runs PageMaker on a Mac.
The problems that ALWAYS come up are:
1. Making sure the fonts are available and look the same on both platforms; and
2. Making sure the graphics transport correctly.
What I've had to do with the graphics nearly every time is to export them separately as .gif files. With fonts, I fax a copy of what the file looks like when I print it, they try to match up acceptable fonts and fax me back a copy of what THEIR result is.
I HAVE also had problems with floppies and zip disks and compression/decompression software. Many of my PageMaker documents vastly exceed the capacity of a single floppy; Mac and PC zip drives don't like eachothers' disks; and Mac and PC decompression technologies don't always work together. So, I've found, if I cannot email the file(s) to the printer (and, often, the printer cannot accept files larger than 2 MB), I have to create a CD to store the files if I want the printer to be able to read it on a Mac.
This is just my experience, but it has consistently been my experience for at least two years now (with both PageMaker 6.0 and 6.5) and with a variety of combinations of Macs and PCs.
