Subject:RE: Further or farther? From:"Bayne, Sonia E B246" <Sonia -dot- Bayne -at- CIGNA -dot- COM> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Wed, 29 Nov 2000 11:05:57 -0500
Belatedly weighing in (the digest, you know)...
The NY Public Library Writer's Guide to Style and Usage has the following:
"farther, further: Careful writers still observe the differences: Farther
indicates a physical distance (think far away); further means "in addition
to." Most authorities have observed that this distinction has either
disappeared or is about to. An informal survey of current writing supports
their conclusion."
By the way, I highly recommend this Writer's Guide as easy to use and
to-the-point.
My 2.099 cents,
Sonia
