Mike asks: Someone who edited one of my documents recently told
me that it is inproper usage to begin a sentence with
the word "However."

The New York Public Library Writer's Guide to Style and Usage says,
"Language in Transition: Can you begin a sentence with however?

'Never, ever begin a sentence with a conjunctive adverb,' insisted the
English teacher to her eighth-graders about 50 years ago. Was she right?
Theodore Bernstein, in The Careful Writer, said ' Forget it.' The placement
of however depends on which ideas are being contrasted; there is no hard
and fast rule in grammar that prohibits placing however at the beginning of
a sentence. The same goes for and and but, by the way."
