It is acceptable to use "however" at the beginning of a sentence.
"Like coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, conjuctive adverbs belp to
link the two clasues they join. But they also serve as adverbs, modifying the
clause in which they appear. And unlike conjunctions, which must be placed
between the word group they join (coordinating) or at the beginning of the word
group they introuduce (subordinating), conjunctive adverbs may usually be moved
from one place to another in the clause. No matter where in the clause a
conjunctive adverb appears, however, the clause must be separated from another
main clause by a period or a semicolon" (H. Ramsey Fowler, ed., -Little Brown
Handbook-, 3rd ed. (Boston, Toronto: Little, Brown and Company, 1986) 231.
