Last week, I posted to the Framer and Techwr-l lists various
suggestions about what people could use instead of FrameMaker for
Linux: StarOffice, Kword, Windows emulators and so on.

Corresponding off list, I realized that I had missed two of the most
obvious substitutes: SGML and XML in general, and DocBook in
particular.

One of the best things about markup languages, of course, is that
you aren't tool dependent. All you actually need is a plain text
editor. However, for those who like a GUI, let me steer them towards
www.conglomerate.org. I'm going to be putting conglomerate through
its paces in the next month or so, but I tried an earlier version,
and it looks very promising. It's also free software, so you won't
be totally stranded if development stops.
