I taught English as a Second Language while I was in grad school, and
considered teaching as a career. While most non-teachers focus on summer
vacations and school letting out at 3 or 3:30, they don't seem to realize
the enormous amount of time teachers work outside the classroom - preparing
lesson plans, grading papers, etc. Also, teachers (at least in elementary
and secondary education) are often required to spend their own money on
supplies for the classroom - materials they want to use for a specific
lesson or unit, treats for the kids, etc., further eroding the paltry sum
they earn.

My sister teaches 4th grade - she works 10-20 hours more per week than I do,
and makes about 1/2 what I do. She must maintain order and keep 15-20
9-year-olds engaged ALL DAY. To me, it's not worth the summers off.

As a technical writer, I get to learn new technologies and "teach" others
how to use them.
