I got a new VCR last year. I hooked up all the cables and plugged it in.
Much to my surprise, the display on it immediately started going through
channels. I stopped in amazement, and dug out the instruction manual.

Sure enough, it said something about automatic channel and time detection.
After three or four minutes, it got through all the channels, and then the
correct time appeared. I hadn't even pressed a button!

So add another category for reasons users use manuals: when something
unexpected happens.
