Re: FrameMaker's apprentice
Hi gang--
Speaking of tools... Depending on how things go in the next day or two, I may find myself having to come up on Framemaker pretty quick. I've looked in the archives, but there's simply too much to sort through.
I've used other DTPs like Ventura and Quark but not in quite a while. (I've been making Word sing and dance for just about ever.) But I've only spent about 10 minutes with a Frame demo, once, and it was surprisingly intimidating to me. Does anyone who's made the transition from Word to Frame have any tricks for reducing the number of rocks on the learning curve?
My suggestions:
1. Print out the included tutorial and work through it. That was enough to get me almost completely up to speed on Frame several years ago when I was in a similar situation.
2. Join the FrameMaker e-mail list. Use the archives first for questions, then ask.
3. Recognize that Frame is not Word. There are some things that are trivially easy in Word that are a serious pain in Frame and vice versa. Comparisons may not be invidious, but if you're bound to that program (and it has many really nice aspects), they're useless.
4. Take note that Frame's help files are in Acrobat. They're much prettier but slower, and searches aren't as useful.

When you're shooting the rapids is _not_ the time for a long multimedia presentation on the engineering dynamics of rapids-shooting, complete with bitter arguments between proponents of two different theories of fluid dynamics.
