Sean,

GIF is NOT lossy. It does only support 256 colors, unlike TIFF which
supports millions. TIFF is best used for graphics that you would make JPEGs
out of. The best way to view it is this:

JPEG (and therefore, TIFF): Best for Photographic images
GIF: Best for line art (vector images,
limited colors, etc.)

You can use TIFF for line art, but it's a bit of overkill. The resulting
TIFF files would most probably be larger than the associated GIF.
