On one of our local radio stations, they actually had a biochemist explain
why this happens (ah, the joys of living in a university town).

Evidently the safest things to do are to only microwave in an old cup or mug
(more scratches on the interior surface interrupt the superheating), or to
be sure there is
something in the water, like a teabag.

I guess water's just one of those things -- remember, if you're making ice
tea, always put a spoon in the glass before you pour the boiling water into
it. This keeps the glass from breaking.
