I don't understand this magic number of 8 hours a day. If I'm more
productive at home and can complete my work in 6 hours instead of the 8
hours it would take me to complete the work at the office, why shouldn't I
just work 6 hours at home? For that matter, if I can complete the
responsibilities of my full-time job in 30 hours a week, why should I sit
around the office for another 10 hours a week?
At my last position I hired in to work full-time but after a few months I
decided that time with my children was more important and I asked to work
only 30 hours a week. Management was quite happy with the situation. They
never reduced my responsibilities - I still did the same amount of work that
all the other (40 hrs/wk) writers on the team did, plus I had the added
responsibility of being the sole editor for online documentation. The only
reduction I saw was in my pay. The company got to pay me 75% of my salary
and still got full-time work out of me. I'll never do that again. If I can
carry my weight and do what I'm hired to do (and do it well, of course) and
it only takes me 30 hours a week to do it, then I see no reason to be
penalized just because I'm efficient. I also see no reason to hang out at
the office just because it takes others 40 hours a week to accomplish what I
can accomplish in 30. I want my employment to be based on what I can produce
instead of how many hours it takes me to produce it.
