>You might look for a book by Karen A. Schriver entitled Dynamics in
Document
Design. It was published in 1997, and has a decent history/evolution of the
profession. At the end of that chapter, there's a good timeline for
document design (1900-1995)
-------
Schriver missed the mark and that mark was made by the first Tech Writer who
detailed how to kill animals on a cave wall.

>...It's easy reading overall...

So was the first Tech Writer's stuff.

Step 1. Chase animal.
Step 2. Fling sharp stick at animal.
Step 3. Light fire.
Step 4. Cook animal.
Step 5. Eat animal.

Of course, the first Tech Writer was really a revisionist when s/he/it
sub-contracted the work to a graphic artist who used broad strokes to
capture a moving target.
