Snipped from Sean's email:

English majors bring a solid understanding of the mechanics of the language
to the job (words like "freaking" ;?). Seriously, putting together a halfway
decent sentence is half the battle. Just because somebody is educated and
has been speaking English since they were one does not qualify them to be
writers.

=====================

I kind of want to jump in on this as an English Master. My education gave me
more than the skills I needed to write. It also gave me the skills I needed to
investigate a subject. Putting together all those research papers on a variety
of subjects was a great apprenticeship in Technical Writing whether I knew it or
not especially when you add to that I needed to learn several computer programs
such as WordPerfect and Word to develop my work. (Okay, I did write my first
paper on a manual typewriter, but I don't want to age myself too much.) I also
used electronic resources when they became available such as online catalogs and
the Internet. Even more valuable than the writing and research skills, I was
taught to use critical thinking skills to evaluate source material in terms of
cause and effect, validity, and credibility. In other words, I was taught to
understand how things fit together and how to fit things together in a way that
communicates meaning and makes sense.

My ability to use these skills effectively is of course always debatable
(smile).
