As a lone tech writer, I'm the one responsible for creating and updating the
style guide, so I get the wonderful liberating effects of having using tools
for document design and writing style without any constraint.

And maybe the key word here is tools--which can be adapted as needed--not
rules, which must be followed.

If I had a manager pounding on my head with a style guide I didn't agree
with and had no input into, I would probably feel constrained.
